About us

The Association of Art Libraries represents the interests of public art lending in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany`s northernmost federal state. Art libraries are non-profit institutions run by libraries, cultural offices, museums or art associations. Art libraries lend out only original works of contemporary art free of charge or for a small fee.

Artotheques in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Denmark

Anyone who creates a work of art wants viewers to engage with it in a relaxed atmosphere. Where better to do that than within your own four walls? In museums, we can at best glance at works of art. What would we think of someone who ‘reads’ 50 books in an hour in a library? Even a work of fine art only becomes accessible over a longer period of time. But financial limitations often stand in the way of acquiring art. Art libraries have been addressing this problem for many years by lending paintings, graphics and sculptures for a certain period of time.

Video art is particularly affected by a lack of time in exhibitions. Our offer is to give space to this art genre. We give borrowers the opportunity to live with video art. The videos may be jointly used not only by the borrowers themselves, but also by family members, employees and visitors.
